Why private cover in Switzerland

The coverage challenges facing expats in Switzerland

Switzerland has one of the most expensive and complex insurance markets in Europe. Understanding your obligations and gaps is essential from day one.

💰

KVG/LaMal costs are very high

Switzerland's mandatory basic health insurance (KVG/LaMal) has some of the highest premiums in Europe, typically CHF 350–600 per month per adult. The mandatory deductible (franchise) ranges from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 per year. Expats often face significant out-of-pocket costs and need careful planning.

🌍

Cross-border worker complexity

Switzerland has a large population of cross-border workers (frontaliers) from France, Germany, and Italy. Their insurance situation is complex — they may be eligible for coverage in their country of residence or in Switzerland, and getting it wrong is expensive.

🦷

Dental and supplementary gaps

Swiss mandatory insurance does not cover dental, optical, or many alternative therapies. Supplementary (Zusatzversicherung/LCA) plans are essential for expats who want comprehensive cover.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. All residents of Switzerland must take out basic health insurance (Grundversicherung/LaMal) within three months of arriving. The basic plan covers essential medical care, hospitalisation, and medications, but not dental or optical. Premiums vary by canton and insurer, typically CHF 350–600 per month per adult. You choose your own franchise (deductible), ranging from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 per year.
Generally no. If you are a resident of Switzerland, you are required to join the Swiss KVG/LaMal system. Exceptions exist for cross-border workers (frontaliers) who may opt out and remain covered in their country of residence, and for certain short-term assignment workers. Always verify your status with your Gemeinde (municipality) on arrival.
The franchise is the annual deductible you pay before your Swiss insurer covers costs. You choose your level from CHF 300 (standard) up to CHF 2,500 (maximum). A higher franchise means lower monthly premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs when you need care. You also pay 10% of costs above the franchise up to a maximum of CHF 700 per year.
For most expats, yes. Swiss mandatory KVG/LaMal covers the essentials but excludes dental, optical, alternative medicine, private hospital rooms, and international coverage beyond emergencies. A Zusatzversicherung covers these gaps. Dental cover alone typically costs CHF 20–50 per month extra. Full supplementary plans with private hospital cover cost CHF 80–200 per month on top of your mandatory premium.
Switzerland has some of the most expensive health insurance in the world. Mandatory KVG/LaMal costs CHF 350–600 per month per adult depending on canton and insurer. Adding a Zusatzversicherung brings the total to CHF 450–800 per month. For cross-border workers or those exempt from the Swiss system, an international IPMI plan from Cigna Global or Allianz Care typically costs CHF 180–450 per month.
